Morning Market Report. October 9, 2026.
The broader crypto market dropped roughly 4.5% in total value over the past 24 hours, with losses spread across all major coins and the trend reading firmly pointing downward.
Bitcoin is trading at $82,069, down 1.3% on the day. It is the most resilient of the four today. About 65% of leveraged traders are positioned for a rise, and the fee that those bullish bettors pay to hold their positions sits at a moderate 5.8% annualized, suggesting no extreme crowding yet. Notably, roughly $3.3 million in short-side leveraged positions were forcibly closed in the past hour, meaning traders who were betting on a fall got caught out as the price stabilized somewhat.
Ethereum fell harder, losing 3.6% to reach $2,486. Crowd positioning is more stretched here, with 76% of leveraged traders on the long side. In the last hour, nearly $3 million in short bets were wiped out, a similar pattern to Bitcoin. XRP is at $1.39, down 2.4%, yet its fee structure is unusual: traders betting on a rise are actually being paid at an annualized rate of 16.8%, meaning the short side is very dominant in derivatives and paying a premium to hold their bets. New leveraged long positions are also accumulating here, so this coin is worth watching for a sudden squeeze in either direction. SOL is the weakest of the four today, down 5.6% to $110, and leveraged long positions are being forcibly closed, meaning some bullish traders are getting flushed out by the move.
On the flow side, Bitcoin ETFs saw $238.6 million leave in a single day, and the seven-day outflow total stands at $550.6 million across two consecutive days of net withdrawals. Institutional money is moving out, not in, at the moment. The Fear and Greed index reads 59, technically still in "Greed" territory, which is a disconnect worth noting: sentiment surveys have not yet caught up with the price weakness.
Over $1 billion in leveraged long positions were liquidated across the market in the past 24 hours, compared to just $148 million on the short side. That imbalance tells us that the move lower has been painful for optimistic leveraged traders. BTC and ETH alone accounted for roughly $565 million of those long liquidations.
We also measure an internal heat score for BTC (0.37 out of 1) and ETH (0.30), which we track for our own reference. These are early-stage readings with no established predictive track record, so we note them purely as something we are monitoring, not as any kind of signal.
Today, the main things to observe are whether ETF outflows continue for a third consecutive day, whether SOL stabilizes or extends its drop, and whether the XRP derivatives dynamic resolves quietly or produces a sharp move. The gap between "Greed" sentiment and actual price action is also something to keep an eye on as the day develops.

The European Securities and Markets Authority issued guidance saying authorized platforms must stop letting EU customers trade or add to stablecoins that do not comply with MiCA rules. Arkham data show the coins, worth about 1.01 billion dollars, went to new unlabeled addresses rather than an exchange, a pattern closer to wallet reshuffling than a sale. A day earlier, roughly 3,200 BTC and 119 million dollars in USDT from seized funds reached Coinbase Prime addresses.
